The crash took place in New London County around 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 4 on I-95 in Stonington.

According to State Police, 39-year-old Kevin Hesch of the village of Pawcatuck in New London County, was killed during a three-vehicle crash when traffic began to back up as the lanes merged due to a left lane closure for construction ahead.

The pileup began when 33-year-old Robert Lachapelle, of Voluntown driving a 2004 Toyota Tundra struck Hesch's 2013 Volvo S 60 from behind, sending it into a wire rope guardrail and down an embankment, state police said.

State police said the truck then struck a 2016 Toyota Sienna driven by Terri Russell, age 54, of Ashland, Virgina, which sent the truck into the wire rope guardrail and down the embankment.

Hesch was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, state police said.

The 33-year-old in the truck suffered minor injuries; two people in the Sienna did not report any injuries, police added.

The crash is under investigation.
